How to pick a career when everyone around you has an opinion

Family, campus, and the internet will all sell you a title. Titles change every few years. Tasks do not. If you choose a name before you try the work, you are choosing a poster.

List the tasks, not the job names

Do you want to write, sell, build, teach, or keep a system running. Those verbs survive rebrands. Engineer, consultant, and founder are costumes. The Tuesday underneath is the career.

Borrow a week

Shadow someone. Freelance a small job. Take a short course with a project at the end. Feel the boring middle, not the LinkedIn headline. If you cannot stand the middle, you will not last the title.

Ignore prestige for one page

Write what you can stand doing badly at first. Careers grow from repetition. Prestige is a crowd reaction. It is a weak compass when you are tired.

Tell people after you have a sample

Opinions get louder when you have nothing to show. A small sample ends half the argument without a fight.
