How to read a 2026 job post that asks for AI — and still apply honestly

Analyses of hundreds of thousands of 2026 job posts put AI just behind communication as a named skill. Remote ads ask for it even more. That does not mean every role is machine learning.
Decode the line
“Familiar with ChatGPT” is different from “production RAG pipelines.” If the rest of the ad is sales or operations, they want safe daily use and clear writing.
Prove the small version
A paragraph on a task you sped up, the check you added, and the mistake the model made. That story beats a prompt pack you bought.
Do not fake the stack
Listing LangChain because it appeared in a tweet is how interviews die in minute ten. Name tools you can open and explain.
Apply anyway when the core job fits
If you can do the actual work — support, writing, analysis, coordination — say how you already use AI as an assistant. Hiring managers are filtering for honesty as much as for tools.
