Communication and negotiation: the 2026 skill hiding behind every AI line

When researchers counted skills in hundreds of thousands of 2026 postings, communication still beat AI. AI beat Python. That order should change how you study. Job ads that name AI are decoded in how to read those postings.
You do not need a speech class. You need to write a decision and hold a line when a client or manager pushes the scope.
Communication that hiring screens can test
A status note with a link, a risk, and a next step. A meeting that ends with an owner. An email a stranger can forward without you on the call. That is the skill. Slide decks are optional.
Negotiation without theatre
Write your walk-away number before the call. Ask what success looks like in 90 days. Trade scope, not dignity. If the client wants unlimited revisions, price the extra rounds. Students giving work away “for the portfolio” should cap the hours in writing.
Where AI fits
