AI agents and office workflows: what to practise if you are not an engineer

Job posts now name LLMs, agents, and automation more often than last year. Most of those posts are not hiring research scientists. They want someone who can take a messy office process and make it shorter without leaking data.
Pick one workflow you already know
Lead intake. Student queries. Invoice reminders. Map the steps on paper first. Only then add a tool. If you cannot draw the steps, the agent will make a louder mess.
What “agent” means at work
A script or no-code flow that reads an input, calls a model, and writes a result to a sheet or inbox. You stay responsible for the output. That is the sentence to practise saying in interviews.
Proof that travels
Before: 40 minutes a day copying emails. After: a checked list the manager can open. Include the failure case — what you do when the model is wrong.
Safety that keeps you hireable
No customer CNIC in a public chatbot. No pasting contracts into a random site. Companies drop candidates who treat confidentiality as optional.
