MEXT Japan Scholarship for Pakistani Students 2027

The Japanese Government MEXT scholarship (Monbukagakusho) is one of the most generous fully funded awards open to Pakistani students. It covers tuition, a monthly allowance and airfare. It is also one of the earliest deadlines in the annual scholarship calendar: embassy recommendation for students arriving in Japan in 2027 opened in spring 2026.

This guide explains what MEXT pays, who is eligible under the FY2027 guidelines, how the Embassy of Japan in Pakistan runs the process, and when the next cycle is likely to open.

Important date status for the 2027 intake

The Embassy of Japan in Pakistan stated that applications for the MEXT Research Scholarship 2027 (master's and PhD track) were open with a last date of 26 May 2026. That deadline has passed. studyinjapan.go.jp explains that recruitment for students arriving in Japan in April or September/October 2027 is made between April and May of the previous year, with first screening by Japanese embassies between May and July.

If you are reading this after May 2026 and you missed the embassy window, you cannot apply for the 2027 embassy-recommendation Research intake through Pakistan. Your options are:

• prepare for the 2028 arrival cycle, which studyinjapan.go.jp indicates will be recruited around April–May 2027;
• check whether individual Japanese universities open a university recommendation MEXT track with later deadlines;

What MEXT covers (FY2027 Research guidelines)

According to the official Application Guidelines for Research Students for 2027:

• Monthly allowance: 143,000 yen for preparatory-education and non-regular students; 144,000 yen for regular master's or professional degree students; 145,000 yen for regular doctoral students. A regional supplement of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may apply in designated areas. Amounts can change with the Japanese government budget.
• Education fees: entrance examination, matriculation and tuition fees are waived (with the noted exception if you cannot proceed to the degree course).
• Travel: MEXT provides an economy airline ticket to Japan on the stipulated schedule, and return travel under the conditions in the guidelines.

For undergraduate students, the FY2027 Undergraduate Guidelines list a monthly allowance of 117,000 yen, plus the same style of fee waivers and travel support. Undergraduate awards that include preparatory education typically last five years from April 2027 to March 2032 (longer for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or a six-year pharmacy course).

Eligibility highlights (Research Students, FY2027)

• Nationality: citizenship of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan (Pakistan qualifies). Japanese nationals at the time of application are not eligible, with limited dual-nationality rules stated in the guidelines.
• Age: in principle, born on or after 2 April 1992.
• Academic background: must meet the conditions for admission to a master's or doctoral course at a Japanese graduate school (for example, completing 16 years of school education outside Japan for a master's / first-phase doctoral course). Applicants who will meet the condition by enrolment can apply.
• Health: a prescribed health certificate signed by a physician.
• Arrival: choose April 2027 (arrive 1–7 April 2027) or the October term window set by the accepting university. Changing the arrival period after submission is not allowed in principle.

Undergraduate applicants under the FY2027 guidelines must in principle have been born on or after 2 April 2002 and must satisfy the academic-background conditions (typically completion of 12 years of schooling).

How the Embassy recommendation process works

studyinjapan.go.jp is clear: do not send documents directly to MEXT in Japan. You apply through the Japanese diplomatic mission in your country.

In Pakistan, the Embassy of Japan in Islamabad and the Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi handle MEXT. Follow the jurisdiction instructions on the embassy page so you submit to the correct office.

Typical Research-student stages under the FY2027 schedule in the guidelines:

1. Submit the application documents to the embassy or consulate by its deadline.
2. First Screening by the diplomatic mission: document review, written examinations in Japanese and English, and interviews. (The English test may be exempted where English is the official language; follow local guidance.)
3. Successful candidates submit a Placement Preference Application Form (deadlines vary by mission, around September–early October 2026 for the 2027 cycle).
4. MEXT conducts second screening and university placement from around November 2026.
5. Results and university placement are notified via the diplomatic mission between January and March 2027.

The Pakistan embassy Research page listed required documents including the Mark Sheet Form, Application Form, Research Plan, attested degree and transcripts, and a recommendation letter. Document rules are strict: incomplete files are not processed, and submitted documents are not returned.

Research plan tips for Pakistani applicants

The guidelines say your research plan must be detailed and concrete. Name the problem, the method, why Japan, and which laboratories or supervisors fit. Japanese language

Many Research grantees spend the first six months of their scholarship period in preparatory Japanese-language education if they need it. Undergraduate grantees usually complete a one-year preparatory course before the degree. You do not need JLPT before applying for Research, but Japanese ability helps after arrival and is tested at First Screening for reference.

• strengthen your research proposal and contact potential supervisors;
• improve English and, if useful, begin Japanese basics;
