The Chevening scholarship is the UK government's flagship award for future leaders. It pays for a one-year master's degree at a UK university, and Pakistan is one of the eligible countries. It is also one of the most misunderstood scholarships in Pakistani WhatsApp groups. Some people think fresh graduates can apply. Others think an agent can "process" the application. Many miss the deadline because they read it in UK time.

This guide is for Pakistani applicants in the 2027–28 cycle. It covers the deadline in Pakistan time, who is eligible, what the award pays for, how the four essays work, and a practical plan for the final week.

The deadline in Pakistan time

Chevening's official timeline says the 2027–28 application window opened on 4 August 2026 at 11:00 UTC. It closes on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. In Pakistan that is 4:00 pm PKT on Tuesday 6 October 2026. Chevening states you will not be able to access the online application system after that time.

Do not plan to submit on the last afternoon. Portals slow down, internet connections drop, and you may find a missing field you did not expect. Aim to submit at least 48 hours early.

What Chevening pays for

The August 2026 terms and conditions list the main parts of a standard award:

Tuition fees for an eligible one-year master's. For MBA courses, Chevening's tuition contribution is capped at £22,000, and you fund any difference.
A monthly living allowance (stipend). The rate depends on whether you study in London or elsewhere and is reviewed each year. Your award letter confirms the figure, so do not trust stipend numbers quoted on random blogs.
Economy return travel to the UK by an approved route, for you only.
An arrival allowance and a departure allowance.
The cost of one visa application for you.
Up to £75 towards a TB test if your visa application needs one.
A travel top-up for Chevening events in London, for scholars on the non-London stipend.

The award does not support family members. If you are married or have children, plan honestly for that before you apply.

Who can apply from Pakistan

Chevening's core eligibility rules for this cycle are:

Citizenship: you must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country. Pakistan is on the list.
Return commitment: you must return to your home country for at least two years after the award ends.
Degree: you need an undergraduate degree that lets you enter a postgraduate course at a UK university.
Work experience: you need at least 2,800 hours of work experience gained after completing your undergraduate degree (more on this below).
Courses: you apply to three different eligible UK master's courses. You must hold an unconditional offer from one of them by 17:00 UK time on 8 July 2027.

The 2,800-hour rule, explained

Chevening describes 2,800 hours as roughly two years of full-time work, based on a 35-hour week. The experience must be spread over at least two years. For this cycle, Chevening says you must have completed your undergraduate degree by October 2024.

These count: full-time jobs, part-time jobs, voluntary work, and paid or unpaid internships. You can list up to fifteen different employment periods. The system multiplies the weeks you worked by the hours you worked each week. If you do not reach 2,800 hours, Chevening says it will reject your application.

A common mistake is to count internships or jobs from before your final degree result. Chevening counts hours from after you completed your undergraduate degree, so work out your dates carefully.

Do you need IELTS?

Chevening no longer asks you to submit an English test as part of the Chevening application itself. Your UK university will usually still want proof of English before it gives you an unconditional offer, often an IELTS or similar score. The four essays

Chevening's application guidance asks you to answer four questions about:

Leadership and influence: times you took the lead and influenced others.
Networking and relationship building: how you have built strong working relationships.
Your course choice: focused on your first-choice course.
Your career plan: a clear, realistic, achievable plan after your studies.

The word limits appear next to each box in the online form. Chevening tells applicants to note them there, so plan against the limits you see in your own form, not a number quoted on social media. Chevening recommends drafting your answers in a separate document before pasting them in. It also says that using AI to generate essay answers is strictly prohibited and treated as plagiarism and fraud. Write your own words.

Strong Pakistani applications tend to share a few habits:

Each essay uses one or two specific examples with a result you can measure, such as people trained, a process changed, or funds raised.
The career plan names a real problem in Pakistan and a realistic role you will hold within a few years of returning.
The course essay explains why that particular course and its modules fit the plan, rather than praising the UK in general terms.

Choosing your three UK courses

Use Chevening's course finder to confirm that each course is eligible. The three courses do not have to be identical, but they should all support the same career goal. You do not need to have applied to the universities before you submit your Chevening application. Chevening also says you can change your course later if you are invited to interview.

References and documents

On the form you give the names and contact details of two referees. If you are invited to interview, you then upload their reference letters. Chevening's timeline says interviewees must upload documents, including photo ID, their undergraduate certificate and the reference letters, at least seven working days before the interview.

Tell your referees now, even though letters come later. Keep scanned copies of your degree, transcripts and CNIC or passport in one folder. What happens after 6 October

According to Chevening and the British Council:

Chevening checks applications against the eligibility rules.
An independent reading committee assesses eligible applications and creates a longlist.
Longlisted candidates are interviewed in English by a panel at the British High Commission.
Results are expected in June 2027.
Successful scholars must submit an unconditional offer by 8 July 2027 and start their UK studies in September or October 2027.

A seven-day plan if you are applying this week

Day 1: Confirm eligibility. Add up your post-degree work hours in a spreadsheet and check your degree completion date.
Day 2: Shortlist three courses in the course finder and note their English requirements.
Days 3–4: Draft all four essays in a document. Use one strong example per essay.
Day 5: Ask a colleague who knows your work to read the drafts for clarity, not to rewrite them.
Day 6: Enter everything in the portal. Recheck referee emails and employment dates.
Day 7: Submit, well before 4:00 pm PKT on 6 October. Save the confirmation email.

Partner awards and alternatives

Chevening's Pakistan page notes that partner organisations fund additional awards, and some go unfilled each year. Read the partner award list, because some fit specific fields. Chevening applications are submitted only through the official online system linked from chevening.org. No agent can guarantee you a shortlist or an interview, and you do not need a paid consultant to apply. Be wary of anyone who asks for money to "secure" a Chevening seat.
